Is There Such a Thing as Luck?
By Minister of Christ, Daniel Sweet
On March 17th in the USA and in many other countries around the world people celebrate St. Patrick's Day. A holiday closely associated with luck. Four leaf clovers, leprechauns and the "luck of the Irish" are common themes. Does luck truly exist or is luck a state of mind?
Amateur gamblers "feel lucky" during winning streaks and lottery winners are considered quite lucky as well. Is luck at play or are we simply playing the odds? As we turn to the Bible for answers on the issue of luck, there's not much to find there simply because luck in not a biblical principle.
Is there such a thing as luck in the Bible? Do things happen by chance? If they do, then one can speak of someone being lucky or unlucky. But if they do not happen by chance, then it is not appropriate to use those terms.
Everything that happens begins with a cause
that ends in a correlating effect.
For example take rolling dice. Most people would agree that dice are a good example of chance as one cannot predict what combinations of numbers will come up. But I disagree. Mathematically, one can predict within a reasonable certainty how many times a specific combination of numbers will come up in a certain amount of throws.
Professional card players make their money in the same fashion. They aren't lucky when they win a hand. It's a carefully calculated risk based on the odds taking into account the known cards that have already been dealt from the deck. From there they lean on their skills to read the other players and determine whether they are bluffing or truly have a good hand in play.
Luck is nothing more than being prepared
to recognize and act on an opportunity when it occurs.
Famous motivational speaker Tony Robbins says, “The meeting of preparation with opportunity generates the offspring we call luck.”
Concerning bad luck, what the world often thinks is bad luck is either missed opportunities or the adversary trying to defeat you. When you are manifesting the gift of holy spirit you can stop “bad luck” in its tracks.
God is all about preparedness. He has given you all the tools you need to be prepared for defense against attacks from the enemy.
Take these verses in Ephesians 6:10-17 as an example of being prepared against spiritual attacks from the adversary:
10) "...be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.
11) Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
12) For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
13) Wherefore take unto you the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
14) Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;
15) And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
16) Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.
17) And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God".
As it is with spiritual confrontation, it’s the same in sports or even on the battlefield of war. If you are not prepared to do battle using the proper gear for defense then the odds of victory are stacked against you.
God wants you prepared for bad and for good things that will happen to you throughout the course of your life. It's up to you whether you choose to be prepared or not. If you choose to be prepared, then you must decide to act on your preparedness when the time comes for action.
God will set good things in motion for you. If you are not prepared to recognize events and opportunities that are advantageous to you, and be prepared with the proper tools for success, and take action on those opportunities to your benefit, then you might be considered "unlucky" to others who are unprepared as well.
God gave you the tools you need for success, both spiritually and in the physical world. It’s His wonderful gift of holy spirit that comes with nine powerful manifestations. They are listed in 1 Corinthians 12: 7-11.
7) "...the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.
8) For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;
9) To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;
10) To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:
11) But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will."
When you manifest the gift of holy spirit, not only are you fully equipped to overcome every obstacle and win every situation that is righteous, you also recieve the following benefits as listed in Galatians 5:22-23 "...the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness [and] temperance".
God gave you the full package of preparedness for defense and for victory; and He even rewards you for using it! Now it’s up to you to choose to use it or lay it on the ground and do nothing.
Get in the Game
Be vigilant. Put on the whole armor of God. Get born again, accept God's holy gift of power to you and manifest the gift of holy spirit. Keep your eyes open both physically and spiritually. Get in the game. Play the odds. Roll the dice of life. Don't give up too soon. Odds are your winning combination will come up if you roll the dice enough times.
Metaphorically speaking, play the hand you've been dealt. Count the cards and carefully watch the other players. Take appropriate action by manifesting discerning of spirits, word of knowledge, wisdom, faith, miracles and healing when necessary. When events turn in your favor, take advantage of them. You'll find that more good things will begin appearing in your life as a proper correlating effect. You’ll also notice less bad things happening to you as well.
Some might even say you're lucky, but we know what it really is... it's you being a good and faithful steward of all that which God has given you!
